650 STEPS TO THE TOP

We hit the road again this weekend, this time headed for the town of Soroca on the Ukranian border. The town is famous for 2 things; gypsies and a medieval fortress built around sometime in the 14th century. Of course the town has no directions to the fortress (the only tourist attraction within hundreds of miles) so we drove around until we saw the above monument high on a hill overlooking the Dniester river, certain that this must be part of the fortress. 650 steps later (Mary counted coming down), we found out the fortress was across town. I carried Anna up (and down) all 650 steps all the while hacking up a lung every 12 steps after inheriting the cold/bronchitis that all the kids were down with last week. What we ended up climbing up was the "Candle of Remembrance". I'm not sure what it was built to remember, but the view from the top was nice.

We did finally find the fortress and it was quite cool. It was also one of the most dangerous places I have ever brought the kids. There was about 500 million places that kids could have fallen, tripped, slipped, etc... to their slow and painful death. The railings were rickety, rotted or non-existant leading each adult to hang onto the shirt of whichever kid was nearest.

Other than our trip it has been a slow week (activity wise). After about 15 trips to the Dr. last week, we chalked up 1 ear infection and 2 cases of bronchitis. We are headed to Romania this weekend if all goes as planed. Stay tuned for reports on our next road trip....

Have a great week
